Paper Makes Decisions is a series of three lighting pieces, two lamps and one candle, that begins with a deliberate shift in authorship: what happens when the material is no longer expected to comply, but is instead allowed to respond?

More Details About the Project

The Aim
Paper Makes Decisions, Paper Shares Outcomes, Paper Makes Meanings is a series of three lighting pieces, two lamps and one candle, that begins with a deliberate shift in authorship: what happens when the material is no longer expected to comply, but is instead allowed to respond? The project moves away from control as a primary design tool and instead constructs a space where negotiation, unpredictability, and material behavior become central. The work is not about imposing form onto matter, but about observing how form emerges when conditions are set and then partially released.

Materials The objects are made from a composite of recycled paper pulp, paper bulb fibers, and xanthan gum as a natural binder. While molds are used as initial guides, they are not treated as instruments of precision. Moisture content, gravity, drying time, and environmental conditions all actively participate in shaping the outcome. As a result, each piece carries traces of its own making, revealing a process that remains visible rather than concealed.

The Role Of Paper
Paper, in this context, is no longer a passive substrate. It becomes an active participant, absorbing, deforming, resisting, and adapting. The series suggests that meaning in design does not only reside in the final object, but in the relationships that produce it: between maker and material, between intention and response, between control and release. Here, form is not imposed, it is negotiated.
